Rowntree A-Z

Hungate

Referred to by Seebohm Rowntree in 1901 in Poverty: A study of town life as, “one of the main slum districts in York.” As the population of York trebled between 1801 and 1901, with the influx of immigrants, the living conditions of the area suffered, with a high rate of water-borne diseases.
