Where can I keep up to date with the work of The Rowntree Society?

You can subscribe to our e-newsletter at the bottom of our homepage, and follow us on Twitter @rowntreesoc or Facebook for our latest updates.

How can I support The Rowntree Society?

We are a small independent charity, with limited resources, and we welcome your support of all kinds, whether financially or by volunteering with your time or expertise.

I’d like to make a donation

To make a financial donation (to one of our projects or to help with our core costs),  it is easy to pay online (with or without Gift Aid) via Local Giving.

If you’d like to talk to us about leaving a donation to the Society in your will, you can get in touch via the email below.

I have Rowntree-related materials I’d like to donate.

We don’t have our own Rowntree archive, so we can’t easily accept donations of materials. However, if you are looking for a home for any item or photograph, we are happy to put you in touch with the relevant people and institutions who may be able to help you.

Over the past few years we have successfully negotiated the transfer of some major collections of Rowntree materials into public collections, as well as the conservation of scarce items of public interest or value, so they may be known to future generations of Rowntree enthusiasts.

Can I become a volunteer?

In recent years, our volunteers have undertaken new research, written materials for publication, assisted at community events, done oral history interviews, contributed photography and worked on digital development. In addition to rolling volunteer opportunities, we host MA Placement students in Public History from the University of York on an annual basis.

Currently (Spring 2021) we are not seeking new volunteers while we review and update our volunteering programme. However, you can keep informed of future opportunities to volunteer with us via our newsletter and social media channels.

I want to find out about a family member who worked for the Rowntree Company.

Although we are unable to undertake research into specific individuals on your behalf, the Rowntree Archives at the Borthwick Institute for Archives has a number of resources that may help you find out more about family members with a Rowntree connection. Our Researching Rowntree page has further guidance and information on this and other historical research queries.

I want to share my memories of working at the Rowntree Factory in York.

We are continuing to build a memory bank following our Heritage Lottery funded project ‘York Remembers Rowntree’ in 2014 and 2015. If you would like to send us your memory you can do so at info@rowntreesociety.org.uk and it will be added to our collection.

I have a question about an image on your website.

We are currently in the process of reviewing the images featured on our site and adding information on their sources. If you have a specific query about an image featured on one of our pages, get in touch with us via email.

I have a query about a Rowntree-named confectionery product I’ve bought

We have no connection with the production of any currently available Rowntree-branded products, which are all now made by Nestlé nowadays. If you’ve got a comment about any product you can contact Nestlé directly via consumer.services@uk.nestle.com.

Other questions?

If you don’t find the right answer on this site please get in touch with us via info@rowntreesociety.org.uk the above address and we will do our best to answer your question or put you in touch with others who may be able to help you further.
