Joseph Rowntree Inducted into Inaugural Charity Hall of Fame
We’re delighted to share that Joseph Rowntree has been inducted into the Charity Hall of Fame as part of its very first cohort – a fitting tribute during the year of his Centenary.
Joseph Rowntree’s lifelong commitment to tackling the root causes of social injustice has left a lasting legacy, both in York and far beyond. His values continue to shape our work today, 100 years after his passing.
The full Class of 2025 includes figures from across history who have made a profound impact through their charitable work. You can view the full list here: Charity Hall of Fame: Class of 2025
Also among this year’s inductees is abolitionist and writer Olaudah Equiano, who visited York in 1791. During his time here, he stayed with William Tuke, a fellow Quaker and early reformer with ties to the Rowntree family tradition. It’s a powerful reminder of York’s deep-rooted history of social reform and justice.
