Pavement

Joseph was born at 28 Pavement in York on 24 May 1836; the second of Joseph Rowntree Senior’s and his wife Sarah’s three sons. 28 Pavement is the site of the Rowntree grocery business, established by Joseph Senior, which preceded their involvement in chocolate. Today the building has a different facade and is occupied by Pizza Express. York Civic Trust have installed a blue plaque which commemorates Joseph.
