Andrew Marr’s ‘The Making of Modern Britain’
The Society advised BBC2 on the exploration of Seebohm Rowntree’s work in the making of this programme.
Marr pointed out the contribution made by ‘Poverty’ to 20th century discussion on the conditions of the poor. Rowntree argued that people slipped into poverty for a range of different reasons, such as ill health or widowhood or old age. Marr concludes this section of the programme by saying that the book ‘set thinking Britain alight’.
Reception to launch the Rowntree Society
In 2008 at the Garden House, Clifton, we welcomed the Lord Mayor to an official launch of the Rowntree Society. The Yorkshire Film Archive showed some Rowntree films. Around this time the Rowntree walks were launched by Hugh Bayley MP.
