Welcome to the Rowntree Society

Welcome to the Rowntree Society, a  charity set up to try to ensure that the work and ideas of the Rowntree family continue to influence a new generation.   Here you will find information about Joseph Rowntree, the famous chocolate manufacturer and philanthropist, and other members of the family, including his son, Seebohm Rowntree.

For 150 years the Rowntree name has been associated with the confectionery industry, and it is known for its progressive business management processes; its philanthropic activity that is informed by its Quaker roots; its enlightened political engagement and contribution to social reform; and its pioneering development of a model village and garden factories.

By browsing the site, you can look at quotations by or about the family and their work, read articles, follow a virtual walk round York and sites connected with the family.  You can also find learning resources which we have developed especially for school-age students.

Please note that - despite our name - we are entirely separate from the famous Rowntree Trusts; if you were looking for them in order to raise some money, you will need to go to http://www.josephrowntree.org.uk/) .

We are grateful to all our supporters, and you can find out more information about them here. We  hope that you will support the businesses and groups which support us – they care about York and its heritage.
