The Rowntree Society was founded in 2001 to further knowledge about the lives and legacy of the extraordinary Rowntree family over several generations and over 200 years. It was registered as a Charity in August 2004; our latest audited Report and Accounts can be viewed here.
The Rowntree Society helps to build a strong, locally-rooted narrative about the work and legacy of the Rowntree family in the city of York.
We are separate from the Joseph Rowntree trusts (the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, and the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust), but we work closely with the trusts on legacy issues from time to time. For information about these trusts see here.
We act as an information point, helping to put people in touch with each other, and advising on new projects and initiatives locally as well as nationally.
As well as history, you can explore the ongoing legacy of the Rowntree Family – using our resources for schools and researchers, as well as detailed information on recent projects carried out by the Rowntree Society.
